Meta Description Generator

Writes meta description options and measures each in pixels against the real snippet width, with a Google preview showing where the cut falls.

About the page

A sentence or two on what the page offers. The more specific, the less generic the options.

Why pixels, not characters

Google cuts a result when it runs out of room, and letters are not the same width. WWW MMM WWW MMM WWWW and illi illi illi illi. are both 20 characters; the first is more than twice as wide. A character counter calls them identical and is wrong about both. The bars above measure the real string against the real space.

One thing worth knowing: Google rewrites meta descriptions most of the time, choosing a passage from the page that matches the search instead. Writing a good one is still worth it — it is what shows for your brand and your main keyword — but do not expect it to appear on every query.

Why use it

Built to be genuinely useful

Measured, not counted

Snippets are cut on width. The bars show your real string against the real space, desktop and mobile.

Written to be clicked

A description is advertising copy for a search result, and it is written as copy rather than as a summary.

Honest about rewriting

Google replaces most descriptions. This page says when yours will show and when it will not.

Several angles

Different approaches to compare side by side, rather than one answer to accept.

How it works

Three steps

  1. 1

    Describe what the page offers.

  2. 2

Add your keyword and a call to action.

  3. 3

Compare, preview, and copy the meta tag.

What a meta description is actually for

It is not a ranking factor. Google confirmed that years ago and has repeated it since — you can write a perfect description and it will not move you a single position.

What it does is win the click. Your result sits among nine others, and two lines of text are most of what distinguishes them. A description that says what the reader gets, concretely, takes clicks from results that say "We provide the best solutions for all your needs".

Those clicks matter for reasons beyond the traffic itself: they are the difference between ranking third and getting nothing, and ranking third and getting a third of the page's visits.

Google rewrites most of them, and that is fine

Studies consistently find Google replacing meta descriptions on the majority of queries, often around two thirds. It pulls a passage from the page that matches the specific search instead, because a single fixed description cannot suit every query a page ranks for.

This is not a failure of your description. A page ranking for forty queries genuinely is better served by forty tailored snippets, and Google is usually right about which passage answers a given search.

Yours is most likely to show for your brand name and your main keyword — the searches where somebody already knows what they are looking for, and the ones most likely to convert. That is precisely why writing a good one is still worth twenty minutes, and why expecting it on every query is not.

Writing one that earns the click

Front-load. Mobile shows noticeably less than desktop, and the reason to click has to survive the cut. Everything essential belongs in the first 120 characters; the tail is a bonus.

Be specific and be true. "Compare 14 free SEO tools, each tested on a live site" beats "the best SEO tools for your business" because it makes a checkable claim. Overpromising wins the click and loses it again within seconds when the page does not deliver — and that bounce is visible.

Include the keyword naturally. Google bolds words matching the search, and bolded text draws the eye down the page. That is a formatting advantage rather than a ranking one, and it is real.
