The 60-character myth
Almost every title tool counts characters and shows green up to about 60. That number is a rough average that gets treated as a rule, and it is wrong in both directions because Google does not count characters at all — it fills a column roughly 600 pixels wide and cuts when it runs out of room.
Letters are not the same width. Compare "WWW MMM WWW MMM WWWW" with "illi illi illi illi." — both exactly 20 characters, and the first is more than twice as wide. A character counter calls them identical and is badly wrong about both.
In practice this means a title of 65 narrow characters often fits comfortably while one of 55 wide ones gets cut mid-word. The bars on this page measure your actual string against the actual space, using Arial's real advance widths, so what you see is what Google will render.
What makes a title earn the click
The title is one of two things a searcher reads before deciding, and it competes against nine others on the same screen. Lead with the words they typed — matching terms are bolded in results, which draws the eye before anything is read.
Put the brand at the end or leave it out. On a site nobody knows yet, the brand at the front spends the widest, most-read part of the line on a word that means nothing to the reader. On a known brand it is worth the space.
Drop the padding. "Ultimate", "Complete", "Best", "in 2026" and "Everything You Need to Know" appear in every competing result, cost width, and add no information. Something specific — a number, a constraint, a place — is worth more than any superlative.
When Google rewrites your title anyway
Google rewrites titles it judges unhelpful for a particular search, and has done since 2021. Keyword-stuffed titles, titles that are pure boilerplate, and titles that do not match the page are the common triggers — it usually substitutes your H1.
The defence is a title that genuinely describes the page in the words people search. A well-written title is left alone far more often than a manipulated one, so writing for the reader is also the practical way to keep control of what appears.
The AI writes the options here; it is never asked to judge whether they fit. Language models are unreliable at counting, and a tool that asked one to check its own lengths would be building on the weakest available foundation. The measuring is arithmetic, done afterwards, on the real string.
