Is the requirement always 75%?

It is the most common figure in Indian higher education, but it varies by institution, and some count practicals separately from lectures with a different threshold for each.

Do medical absences count?

Usually they can be excluded, with documentation and generally within a time limit. The rule is in your institution's regulations, and it almost always requires the paperwork at the time rather than later.

What happens if I fall short?

Why recovering is so much harder than maintaining

Attendance is a ratio with a denominator that only grows. Every class you miss adds to the bottom without adding to the top, so the damage from one absence is permanent — you cannot un-miss it, you can only dilute it with future attendance.

The arithmetic is unforgiving. Sixty classes attended out of a hundred against a 75% requirement means the next sixty must be attended without exception to reach exactly 75%, and any single absence in that stretch puts it out of reach. This is why the useful moment to run this calculation is before the absences, not after.

What the requirement is actually for

The 75% figure is common across Indian universities and AICTE-affiliated institutions, and the consequence of missing it is usually being barred from the examination rather than a mark penalty — which makes it a threshold rather than a sliding scale.

Most institutions have a documented relaxation for medical grounds or approved absence, and it generally requires paperwork submitted at the time rather than an explanation afterwards. If a genuine reason is developing, the time to raise it is while it is happening.
