The Challenge

Expression that does not exclude

An expressive site usually breaks in two directions at once: unusable for anybody who has asked for less motion, and slow for everybody else.

The brief was a site with a strong motion identity that stayed complete for a visitor who never sees a single animation.

The Approach

How we worked

  1. Design the reduced version first

    The static composition was designed before any motion, so reduced-motion is a considered layout rather than the animated one with the movement stripped out.

  2. Motion with a job

    Each effect had to explain a relationship — where something came from, what it belongs to, what changed. Decorative movement was cut.

  3. Compositor only

    Transform and opacity carry every effect, so animation never triggers layout and the page holds its frame rate on a mid-range phone.

  4. Type as the constant

    The typography holds the composition together in both versions, which is what lets the motion be removed without the page collapsing.

The Solution

Two complete versions of the same site

With motion enabled the site reveals itself in sequence — type resolving, imagery wiping into place, sections arriving with intent.

With motion reduced the same composition is simply present. Nothing is missing, and no meaning was ever carried by movement alone.

The phone layout is not the desktop one squeezed down. Density, hit areas and reading order are decided per screen, and the interface keeps its meaning at both ends.
