GIF to JPG Converter

Converts a GIF to JPEG — the first frame if it is animated — with a choice of background for any transparent areas.

Runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded

Your image

Drop an image here

or choose a file — it never leaves your browser

Re-encoding is generationally lossy for JPEG and WebP — each pass loses a little detail. Always work from the original rather than re-processing a result.

Why use it

Built to be genuinely useful

Says what happens to animation

JPEG is a single still image. An animated GIF becomes its first frame, and the page says so rather than letting it be a surprise.

Background chosen, not defaulted

GIF transparency has to become a colour. You pick it.

Nothing is uploaded

The image is decoded and re-encoded by your browser. It never reaches a server, which matters for anything with a face, a document or a location in it.

Free, no watermark

No account, no queue, and nothing stamped across the result.

How it works

Three steps

  1. 1

    Open the GIF.

  2. 2

    Choose the quality and background.

  3. 3

    Download the JPEG.

What a GIF is, and what it costs

GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame. A photograph saved as GIF has been through a palette reduction that is visible as banding in gradients, and converting to JPEG cannot restore the colours that were dropped.

It also has only fully-on or fully-off transparency: a pixel is either opaque or invisible, with nothing in between. That is why GIF logos have jagged edges against a background other than the one they were made for, and why PNG replaced it for static images.

Animation, and what to use instead

JPEG holds one image. Converting an animated GIF keeps the first frame and discards the rest, which is fine if the frame is what you wanted and a loss if it was not.

For animation that needs to stay animated, an MP4 or WebM video is typically 5–10× smaller than the equivalent GIF at better quality, and every platform that accepts a GIF now accepts video. Animated WebP is another option where a single image file is required.
