The only cost is compatibility, and for anything displayed in a browser that cost is now close to zero. For a file that will be sent elsewhere, PNG remains the safer format.
A photograph stored as PNG is in the wrong format, and lossless conversion carries that mistake across — a smaller file that is still far larger than it needs to be. Lossy WebP is the answer there, and the saving is dramatic.
The test is what the image contains, not what its extension says. Large flat areas of identical colour mean lossless; continuous gradients and photographic texture mean lossy.
