Images saved from the web are increasingly WebP, and a great deal of software has not caught up. Older versions of Office and Photoshop, many photo printing services, and a large number of upload forms accept JPEG and PNG only.
Downloading an image only to find nothing will open it is a common and frustrating discovery. Converting to JPEG solves it, at the cost of a small further quality loss and a larger file.
It is lossy to lossy, so the JPEG discards a little more on top of what WebP already did. At a reasonable quality setting this is not visible, but it is real and it is why converting back and forth repeatedly degrades an image.
Expect the file to grow. WebP is the more efficient format, so the same picture in JPEG at matching quality is typically 25–35% larger. That is the price of it opening everywhere.
