Why reading a code first matters

A QR code shows you nothing. Scanning one with a phone camera usually opens the destination immediately, which means the decision to trust the code is made by the software, not by you — and stickers are cheap to print and cheap to paste over.

Quishing — parking meters, payment counters and posters overlaid with a fraudulent code — works precisely because nobody can read the squares. The person who pastes a new code over a genuine one is betting you will never see the address underneath.

Decoding the image here breaks that bet. You see the raw contents as text: the full address, the UPI VPA, the Wi-Fi name. Opening it becomes a separate, deliberate step taken after reading, not a reflex the camera performed for you.

What is actually inside a QR code

Most codes carry a plain web address, but the format holds any text: UPI payment strings with a payee and amount, Wi-Fi credentials, contact cards, plain messages. The scanner shows whatever is there, unmodified and unshortened.

The reveal is often instructive. Marketing codes frequently point through a tracking redirect rather than at the printed brand's site, and a payment code shows the receiving VPA — worth a glance before money moves, since the name on the sticker is not part of the code.

Nothing is fetched during decoding. Reading the code is pure image processing on your device; no request is made to the address inside it, so even a malicious link is inert until you choose to open it.

When a code will not read

The usual causes are mundane: the photo is blurred, glare cuts across the squares, the code is tilted steeply, or the quiet margin around it is cropped away. Retake the shot straight-on and include some space around the code.

Very small codes in screenshots fail because there are too few pixels per module. The scanner already retries at double size, which recovers most of these; for the rest, crop the screenshot so the code fills more of the frame.

A code that still refuses may be genuinely damaged beyond its error-correction budget, or not a QR code at all — barcode formats look similar at a glance. This tool reads QR codes specifically, and that is the honest limit of it.
