Why is my PNG so much larger than a JPG would be?

PNG is lossless — it stores every pixel exactly rather than approximating. That is the point for text and diagrams, and the wrong trade for photographs.

What DPI should I use?

300 for print, 150 for screen, 72 for a thumbnail. A PDF point is 1/72 inch, so the scale is exact.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The file is opened and processed by your browser, on your machine. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the tool still works — which is the simplest way to prove it to yourself.

When lossless is worth the size

JPG compression works by discarding detail the eye is unlikely to miss. On a photograph that is almost free. Around high-contrast edges — the outline of a letter, the stroke of a chart axis — it produces visible haloing, and once introduced it cannot be removed.

PNG stores every pixel exactly. For a diagram going into a slide deck, a screenshot going into documentation, or a page of text becoming an image, that is the right trade even though the file is several times larger.

For scans and photographs it is the wrong trade — use the JPG tool instead.

Transparency

PNG supports transparency, but pages here are rendered onto white. A PDF page is transparent wherever nothing is drawn, and a transparent page image placed on a dark background becomes unreadable — white matches what the page looks like in a reader.
