Is my file uploaded to a server?

Two things are called protecting a PDF, and only one works

A permissions restriction — an owner password — leaves the document readable by anyone and asks their reader not to print or copy it. It is a flag, not a lock. Any tool that rebuilds the file removes it in seconds, including the unlock tool on this site.

A user password encrypts the document. Without it there is no readable content at all. That is what this tool applies.

If a tool offers to protect your PDF without asking for a password that will be needed to open it, it is doing the first thing and calling it the second.

Choosing the password

Length matters more than punctuation. A memorable phrase of four or five unrelated words beats a short string of substituted characters, and is easier to pass on to whoever needs the file.

Send the password separately from the document — a password emailed alongside the attachment protects against nothing.

There is no recovery

Nothing is uploaded here, which means no copy of your password exists anywhere. That is the point, and it has a consequence: lose it and the document is unrecoverable.
