Should it be black and white or colour?

Getting a clean capture in the first place

Sign on plain white unlined paper with a black or dark blue pen, and make the signature reasonably large — the capture will be reduced, and a small signature enlarged to fit is soft and ragged. A scanner is better than a camera; if using a camera, get even light with no shadow across the paper.

Crop tightly to the signature with a small consistent margin. Portals that overlay the signature on a document expect it to fill the supplied image, and one floating in a large white field appears tiny on the printed form.

Why a signature file is so small

Because it carries almost no information: two colours over a small area. The 10–20 KB limits are not arbitrary, and a properly cropped signature meets them comfortably.

A file far above the limit is usually a photograph of a signature — a full-resolution camera image, complete with paper texture and lighting gradients that compression has to encode. Cropping to the signature and converting to a clean high-contrast image removes the bulk of the file before any compression is applied.
