What size photo does SSC require?

It is stated in each examination's notice and has changed between examinations. Take the figures from the notice for the examination you are applying to rather than from a general page.

Can I use an old photograph?

Most SSC notices require a recent one, often within three months, and some require a visible date. An old photograph is a common rejection reason.

What background should the photograph have?

Plain and light — white is safest. Patterns, furniture and shadows behind the head all cause problems.

Check the notice, not a page like this one

SSC publishes the required dimensions and file sizes in each examination's notice, and they have differed between examinations and been revised between years. Any figure quoted on a third-party page — including this one — may be out of date for the examination you are applying to.

The notice is the authority. Take the numbers from it, then use this tool to hit them. Applications are rejected for photograph and signature problems in numbers that are entirely avoidable, and almost always because the specification was taken from somewhere other than the notice.

What tends to get rejected

Beyond dimensions: photographs older than the period the notice allows, an unclear or shadowed face, a coloured or patterned background, and a signature in block capitals rather than a signature. Several examinations also require the photograph to show a date or be taken within a stated window.

It is worth checking the uploaded images in the preview the portal provides rather than trusting that a successful upload means an acceptable image. The upload succeeding only means the file passed the size check.
