Why the card starts face down

Retrieval is what moves something into long-term memory. Reading a question and its answer together feels productive and does almost nothing, because you never attempt the recall — the answer is right there, and recognising it is a different skill from producing it.

That is the entire reason this is a deck rather than a printable list. Every card opens on the question, you try to answer, and only then do you turn it over. The moment of effort before the reveal is the part that works, and it is exactly the part a two-column list removes.

Marking a card known takes it out of rotation, which matters more than it sounds. The default failure of revision is re-reading what you already know because it feels comfortable, while the handful of things you cannot recall stay unlearned.

One idea per card

A card asking two things cannot be scored honestly. You get half of it and there is no way to record that, so you either mark it known and lose the half you missed, or mark it unknown and keep re-reading the half you had. Both waste the pass.

The generator is instructed to split those, which is why twenty cards from a dense chapter often cover fewer distinct facts than you expected. That is the right trade: a smaller deck you can score accurately beats a longer one you cannot.

The front also has to stand alone. A card reading “Explain the above” is useless once the deck is shuffled, and shuffling is the point — order becomes a crutch quickly, and you end up remembering the sequence rather than the content.

Where Anki fits

Studying here is fine for a session before an exam. For anything you need to hold for months, spaced repetition scheduling does the heavy lifting, and Anki is the tool that does it properly and free.

The Anki export is a plain tab-separated file: front, tab, back, one card per line. In Anki choose File → Import, pick the file, set the field separator to Tab and choose your deck. Tabs and line breaks inside a card are flattened to spaces first, because the plain-text importer has no way to escape them and a stray tab would split the row.

The CSV export exists for Quizlet and for spreadsheets, where the quoting rules differ. Same cards, different container.
